Detailed itinerary description A drive of 25 miles NW will take us to the Lake of Bracciano. With a surface of 57 sq. km. the Sabatinus Lacus is the eighth lake in Italy, it has a depth of 165 meters, a 20-mile circular perimeter. Three hill towns, Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, are located at exact distance one from the other, forming a perfect triangulation. Around a million of years ago a series of volcanic eruptions formed craters which later became four lakes, been the one of Bracciano certainly the most important. In Roman times its water had been channeled by order of Emperor Trajan and used in Rome for drinkable purpose. The ancient Emperor Trajan's aqueduct had been restored by Pope Paul V at the beginning of the 17th century and its terminal in Rome is the Fontanone, a monumental fountain decorating the panoramic hill called Gianicolo near the Trastevere district. The area of Bracciano Lake is included in a vast naturalistic region with its riparian forest of poplars and willows and its waters are full of pikes, perches and eels. It stretches to the West toward the mountains of La Tolfa and to the East toward the Tiber river valley. Hawks and migratory birds are present; rarer is the presence of mammals because of tourism. The town of Bracciano is positioned high above the Bracciano Lake, 288 meters above sea level. The 15th-century Orsini-Odescalchi Castle is its ideal center. In this mighty construction surrounded by six cylindrical towers, have sojourned Popes, emperors, artists and it is rich of interesting furniture and fresco paintings. We visit the many halls decorated by fresco paintings, the busts of twelve emperors, important collection of medieval armours and weapons. Magnificent panorama from the 'loggia' located in between the towers and wherefrom the delightful secret garden may be appreciated. Within its boundaries lie the historical center of the town and the 15th century most important church, the Cathedral. Bracciano is a place of significant historical and artistic interest. In the vicinity of the church of Maria Saint Novella, in the ex cloister of the Augustinians is a splendid 16th century well built on the date of Paolo Giordano Orsini's and Isabella De' Medici's wedding. Walking through Bracciano charming narrow streets in the historical center of the medieval ‘borgo’ you may appreciate the Middle Age and Renaissance architecture. Bracciano houses the Historical Museum of the Air Force. The lake is used for important competitions of wind-surf. There are good restaurants where local cuisine is based on the lake fishes, but it does not disregard the typical meat, meeting the requirements of gourmands.
