Itinerary description Leaving Rome enjoy a short drive of 20 miles East through pleasant Roman countryside to reach the hill town of Tivoli, passing by the travertine quarries . Travertine is a limestone widely used in Rome constructions (Colosseum, Justice Palace, St. Peter's Basilica and Square, etc.). Once in Tivoli start the visit of Villa D'Este, exploring the halls and rooms of two apartments, decorated by sumptuous ceilings nymphets, demigods, gods. On the walls painted frescoes in trompe l'oeil: fake bookcases with fake books, fake candelabra, fake doors and windows opening on to fake landscapes of old Tivoli, scenes of hunts, etc. Next visit its Italian-style gardens and fountains, splendid example of Renaissance garden art and architecture, widely imitated in whole Europe. The Romantic composer Franz Liszt, guest of Cardinal Hohenzollern in the 19th century was inspired by the sound of these so many fountains in writing a piano suite called "Jeaux d'eau à Villa D'Este". Gardens, fountains and Villa D'Este belonged to Cardinal Ippolito D'Este, son of Lucretia Borgia and grandson of Pope Alexander VI Borgia. Belonging to two of the most prestigious families of Renaissance 16th century period he was rich and cultured. Unfortunately due to cardinals rivalries he was exiled to Tivoli as Governor and he used the most important artists of Mannerism period to transform and decorate a monastery, transforming it into a sumptuous Villa. At the same time he built the marvelous gardens and fountains. As we descend we will see a complex of imaginative monuments of Rome, dotted with water fountains, a little fake Rome in tufa rock, the 'Rometta'. We can make out the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the temple of Dioscuri, the Tiberine Island, etc. In front of this fountain lies the 'Cento Fontane', a lane decorated by three hundred jets of water with sculptured fleurs-de-lis, islets, eagles and obelisks. At the end an enormous round water cascade drops down in the Fountain 'dell'Ovato'. From here we go to the Organ Fountain, where a real hydraulic organ was spreading its whistling melodious sounds all over the gardens. See then the gardens ground level with some 400-year old cypress trees. From this level there is a magnificent perspective of the whole gardens and Villa uphill; in another sight angle the stupendous view of the so-called Neptune Fountain, the largest and highest. On the way up see the imposing Dragon Fountain with high water spurts.
This guided tour of approximately 4 hours to Tivoli may be completed with the visit of Villa Adriana ruins making a full-day excursion, naturally with a break for lunch. In this case the choice will be between a self-service place or a lovely characteristic restaurant to enjoy a typical Roman delicious lunch.
