Itinerary description The only walking will last half hour (back and forth to see the breathtaking Trevi Fountain). Conducted by your licensed guide visit Venice Square, Rome busy modern center, where is the Altar to the Fatherland, disrespectfully nicknamed 'the wedding cake' or 'the typewriter', huge white marble monument celebrating Italian Independence and Unity, dedicated to the king Victor Emmanuel II. Since 1921 it houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. From the bottom of a ramp which climbs up to the Capitoline Hill, catch a sight of the Campidoglio Square, architectural masterpiece designed by the great Michelangelo. Drive by Via dei Fori Imperiali, having a spectacular sight of Roman Forum and Imperial Forums (political, commercial and religious ancient centers) remains, see four marble geographical maps showing the roman conquered territories in different periods, At this moment marvel at the breathtaking Flavian Amphitheater, called since the 8th c. the Colosseum, monumental symbol of the Eternal City, and at the Arch of Constantine. Proceed to St. John in Lateran Square where is the great Cathedral of Rome and the Egyptian granite Obelisk of Tuthmosis IV, oldest monument in the city. See the conspicuous ruins of Caracalla's Thermae (or Baths), the renowned thermal complex of ancient Rome, and the Pyramid of Caius Caestius, 1st c. B.C. monumental mausoleum of the Caestia family. Proceed to the impressive remains of the Imperial Palaces on the Palatine Hill and of the Circus Maximus, the largest chariot racing track of the whole Empire. See the Tiberine Island, the St. Angel Castle (Emperor Hadrian's ancient monumental tomb) and, in the Vatican, the monumental St. Peter's Square with at the background the magnificent St. Peter's Basilica. Drive by the Justice Palace, the Caesar Augustus Square, where are the ruins of his Mausoleum and crossing the beautiful Villa Borghese Park, arrive to Via Veneto, the most elegant and celebrated street of Rome. See Barberini Square where is the Triton Fountain, then the Mermaids Fountain in the Republic Square. Climb the Quirinal Hill, see the Quirinal Palace (Presidential House) and a fountain with two 4th c. imposing marble statues of Castor and Pollux. Walk to the famed and magnificent Trevi Fountain, where you will toss a coin to guarantee your return to Rome.
